Food waste a global problem has an environmental, social, and economic impact. The Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), says that about one-third of the food made for human consumption gets lost or wasted, equaling to 1.3 billion tonnes annually. This waste represents a missed opportunity to feed the hungry. It contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss.
One of the potential solutions to reduce food waste and its adverse effects is to recycle food waste. Food waste diversion helps transforms organics into valuable products, such as compost, biogas, animal feed, or biofuels. Food waste separation can offer multiple benefits, such as:
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: Food waste diversion prevents methane emission, a potent greenhouse gas, from landfills and incinerators. It can also displace the use of fossil fuels by producing renewable energy from biogas or biofuels.
Improving soil health and fertility: Composting Food waste produces a natural fertilizer that can enhance soil quality, structure, and water retention. Compost can also increase crop yields and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
